"You have HIV. HIV does not have you."
Many people living with HIV make a mistake without even realizing it. They slowly begin to believe the words, "I am HIV."
Although they may never say those words out loud, they begin to live as if they are true. This is one of the most painful lies a person can believe after receiving an HIV diagnosis.
The problem is not HIV itself. The problem begins when you stop separating yourself from the virus. When you fail to distinguish who you are from the condition you live with, HIV slowly becomes the lens through which you see yourself.
